Why I Ride And Who I Ride For…

Thank you for visiting my page.

For those of you who may not know me, I have been a member of the Victoria Police Department since September 1995. One of the greatest benefits of my job is to be able to use my profession to support worthy causes in our community.   The Cops for Cancer movement is a cause that is very close to my heart.

When I learned that 82% of childhood cancers are survivable I made it my goal to ensure that this statistic would increase to 100%. This is not an unrealistic goal as only 42% of childhood cancers were considered survivable when I first became involved with the Cops for Cancer movement in 1997 in Victoria, BC.

Although I initially got involved with the Cops for Cancer movement in 1997 to support my mother, a breast cancer survivor, I recently lost my father in October of last year after a very brief and fierce battle with cancer. I am not riding this year because cancer took my dad. I’m riding because cancer did not take my mom. In July she will be attending the world dragon boat championships in Venice Italy to compete with her Breast Cancer Survivors Dragon Boat Team.

The Cops for Cancer movement has made a significant difference in the quality of life for children battling cancer as well as for their families. Through your donation I am confident that the survivability rate of childhood cancer will continue to improve dramatically.

Your donation WILL make a difference.

Best,

Sgt. Derek Tolmie #123
